the leyend of momotaro
A legend of Japanese folklore.
Momotaro is a legendary figure in Japanese folklore whose story highlights the importance of sharing and teaches us that the key to success lies in teamwork.
Legend has it that, in a small village in ancient Japan, there lived an elderly couple who worked hard every day. They had never been able to have children, and this made them feel very lonely. The old man was a woodcutter, while his wife took care of the home.
One day, the old woman went down to the river to wash the clothes and saw a peach floating by. It looked so beautiful and ripe that she did not hesitate to pick it up to share with her husband.
To their great surprise, when they opened the peach, they found a small child inside. They decided to adopt him and name him Momotaro, as momo means “peach” in Japanese.
Momotaro grew up to become a handsome and strong young man, admired by everyone in the village.
One day, the villagers were terrorized by demons who brought chaos to the town. They would rob the people and frighten the children.
“Someone must go to the monsters’ lair and defeat them,” the villagers said. “Only then will our suffering come to an end.”
After much deliberation, the villagers chose Momotaro to face them.
The next day, his father gave him his legendary sword, and his mother prepared a few mochi using a secret family recipe for the long journey ahead.
Halfway there, Momotaro stopped to rest when a giant and fearsome-looking dog approached him. The dog claimed to be the lord of the forest and possessed extraordinary strength. Drawn by the delicious smell of the mochi, he listened as Momotaro explained his mission. Momotaro offered to share the mochi if the dog would join him on his journey, and the dog gladly accepted.
The following day, a monkey wearing armor leapt down before them. Agile and playful, he listened to Momotaro’s story as they shared more mochi, and he too decided to join the adventure.
On the third day of the journey, they arrived at a vast meadow, where they heard the cry of a magnificent pheasant. Majestic like a phoenix, the bird approached them and said he was hungry. Once again, Momotaro shared his mother’s mochi, and the pheasant joined the group.
At last, they reached Onigashima, the Island of Demons. The fortress was dark and forbidding. The pheasant flew over the stronghold, while the monkey leapt across the walls and opened the gates so that Momotaro and the dog could enter.
An epic battle began. The four heroes faced an army of demons in a fierce and merciless fight.
“No more, please!” the demons cried. “We surrender!”
“Only if you promise never again to torment the people of my village,” Momotaro replied.
“We promise!” the demons answered, wounded and trembling with fear.
And so, Momotaro and his faithful companions recovered all the treasures that had been stolen and returned home in triumph. They were welcomed with great honor, peace returned to the village, and Momotaro lived happily ever after beside his inseparable friends.
